Painting for me is the thrill of creating my own special universe. It is the freedom to get lost in a world of my own. I have always enjoyed the feeling of detaching myself from the world and becoming just an observer and interpreter.
While training as an artist, I was taught to follow a pre-determined approach to produce consistent results. With time, I realized that I was falling in a routine, retreating to a safe place and just painting pictures that had the same look. Meanwhile, I had lost the exhilarating feeling of discovering and creating different pieces. For me, developing a consistent style meant giving up and surrendering to the fear of failing. I won’t exchange places with anybody that lost the freedom to experiment and sometimes fail. While painting, I choose the subject while the painting takes me where it wants to be. I feel that a pre-determined approach for all paintings will rob me the feeling of creating. I believe that a painting creates itself, I am just a servant to its creation.
My paintings range from gestural black and white works to more realistic full color pieces. I discovered that on some subjects gestural black and white can depict more dramatic messages. On others, I enjoy the subtlety of full color. I concentrate in achieving dynamism, contrast and explore color effects from the most vivid to subdue.
I can create raging storms, peaceful landscapes, or people and animals relaxing in their own environment. The dominating patterns in my paintings are movement, dynamism, atmosphere, and careful composition, achieving a sense of life even on inanimate subjects.
In colors, I love reds, the passion, the uneasiness, the heat, the power. It speaks to me, it is the Ying. But it is in the combination with cool blues, as the Yang that calms and balances the power. I like to work with big brushes the broad strokes allow me to simplify shapes avoiding distracting details letting me concentrate on color, contrasts, and composition. My preferred medium is acrylics. I feel acrylics let me work more intuitively and build my painting fairly quick.
I feel a piece has turned really well when it is dynamic, has life, represents the mood that I intended, and the harmonic relationship of color, composition, and subject speak to me and achieved what I had imagined.
Through the years I have successfully exhibited in the United States and abroad. But I believe that my greatest achievement has been to be free to create based on what I feel. I paint everything that my imagination demands, my strong foundation of anatomy proportions composition and perspective allows me to successfully approach any subject from people, portraits and animals to cityscapes, landscapes, marina, or mechanical. THANKS FOR VISITING AND ENJOY MY WORK!!!
